Shut Your Mouth and Play Along
Blog — By Jordan Green on September 18, 2009 at 10:00 amI’m on my way to Alabama right now. One of Burnside’s first contributors, Chad Gibbs, is taking me to an Auburn game. I’ve never seen anything like SEC football. I’m excited. Plus, the Tigers are playing West Virginia, so it’s a battle of two of the classiest states in the Union.
I like to know where I’m going, the history and culture, so I scanned by iTunes for the best Alabama-related songs. Here’s one of my favorites.
But Chan Marshall and Bob Dylan aren’t Alabamans, and this state has one of the most prolific musical histories in the country: Muscle Shoals, Hank Williams, Wilson Pickett, Nat King Cole, Percy Sledge, Sam Phillips, Emmylou Harris, The Temptations…Bo Bice.
Here’s what I’m choosing to go with, though. You should turn it up.

[I know this comment is a bit late, but in case you ever get back to the South...]
If you truly want some knowledge of Southern/Alabama culture and history, you should listen to DBT’s “Three Great Alabama Icons,” which is possibly one of the most brilliant and insightful songs that deals with race, culture, and the Southern mindset.
Buy it on iTunes if you have to. If I ever meet you I will give you the dollar.
I’ve got that one, too, Matthew. It’s a great song, I just like “Never Gonna Change” a little better, musically-speaking (though it’s not as good thematically).
And I hope I get back down there again.
