Ah, the Old Reliable Christian-dar

mchale-louLast year, I mentioned my Christian-dar (similar to gay-dar and black-dar) in reference to former Deadspin editor Will Leitch, who it turned out had been heavily involved in youth group.  Admittedly, this wasn’t a huge reach: Will Leitch is from rural Illinois, where Christianity is fairly common.

You’ll notice, though, in that same post, I made two other Christian-dar predictions: Joel McHale and Billy Graham.

The McHale pick lacked any tangible evidence.  McHale grew up near God’s least favorite city and has a Canadian mother.  Plus, he played football at UW, which hasn’t produced the most upstanding array of humanity.

Still, I just had a feeling.  Maybe it was his perspective on the absurdities he covers on The Soup, maybe it was his likability despite his snark.  I don’t know.  The point is, it sounds like I might be right.

”My mom and dad told me to be nice to everybody and give people the benefit of the doubt,” explains McHale, the churchgoing father of two sons, Isaac, 1, and Eddie, 4. ”You show as much respect as you can to someone — until they go on the Rock of Love bus.”

Of course, “churchgoing” can mean any number of things, and he certainly holds a Catholic-sounding view of limited grace. Still, I’m going to stick with my theory and the sweet taste of prophetic success.

Word is still out on Billy Graham, but Entertainment Weekly is on the case, and that story will break any day now.
