Curtis,

I grew up SBC, attended a Baptist College and Southern Seminary in Louisville (1976). When the SBC hoopla started in 1979, I had no intention of walking out, leaving a people who had nurtured me into faith and educated me for the pastoral ministry. Then came a convention in Atlanta (flags waving and another U.S. President speaking) and the crowd responding as if Jesus had just returned for the faithful. A few conventions later a resolution denigrating women was passed. The time had come. I'm still Baptist but, along with the church I pastor (same one for 30 years), I am now affiliated with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. Do I agree with all the CBF does? No. But I like being among Baptists who do know what they stand for and who practice being brothers and sisters while allowing room for discussion and disagreement about what we believe and how we are to serve our Lord.

Thanks for sharing and blessing in your ministry.

Thanks for sharing this article. I'm 19 and have attended an SBC church since I was in middle school. I thought about looking for other denominations a couple of years ago for some of the same issues that you talk about but after praying about it I knew that God's plan for me was to stay at my current church.

It seems that the majority of the lay members I come in contact with are not the ones who spread this hatred but some of the "leaders". It's a very sad thing that this denomination has made issues like this become an us vs. them scenario.

I do not understand how people forget that everyone, saved or unsaved, is a child of God.

I love the story, Curtis. I grew up SBC and was in seminary when I encountered the denominational disdain for women and other people. The American Baptists in Indiana/Greater Indianapolis treated me far better than the people I grew up with, and CBF has also had its bright spots (don't get smug, Bert).

Anyhow, your story really connects because I had a somewhat similar experience in Bloomington with a down on his luck man who was dying of AIDS and happened to call the church when I was standing next to the phone. Taking a risk and caring for people who the rest of the world has rejected speaks to us a way that few other experiences can. I hope you continue to cherish the memory of the day Jesus came to your door.

That's a crazy day, right there.

It will always be a challenge for the church to love its neighbors, and even more so to love its enemies (ie. the people boycotting you across the street). But it's our calling. Love is what it's all about.

I don't know if I would have had the love to what you did for Percy.

[...] On Wednesday, Burnside Writers Collective published an article I wrote called “The Day I Walked Out of the Southern Baptist Convention”. I really put a lot of me into this, and I’m glad many people have read it who need a new perspective on Christianity. To read it, click on the picture above or simply click here.
There's a large group of former Southern Baptists, who have formed their own identity by what they are for and what they do ... the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. (www.thefellowship.info)
